వందేళ్ల కిందటి తెలుగు ఆర్యవైశ్యులు
ఈ రోజు ఓ అరుదైన పుస్తకం చూశాను. అది దాదాపు వందేళ్ళ కిందట(1926) ప్రచురించిన మద్రాస్ ఆర్యవైశ్య డైరక్టరీ (ఆర్యవైశ్య వ్యవస్థా వివక్షణి). ఇప్పటి కాలపు బిజినెస్ పేజెస్ లాంటిదన్నమాట. అప్పట్లోనే మద్రాస్ నగరంలో తెలుగు ఆర్యవైశ్యులు ఎంత వ్యాపారదక్షతతో ఎన్ని వైవిధ్యభరితమైన వర్తకాల్ని నిర్వహించేవారో, ఎంత పెద్ద ఎత్తున దేవస్థానాలకు దానధర్మాలు చేసేవారో, ఎంతమంది విద్యాధికులున్నారో ఈ పుస్తకంలో చూస్తే అబ్బురపడిపోతాం. అప్పటికే నిర్మించిన ఒక వైశ్య విద్యార్థి హాస్టల్, కన్యకాపరమేశ్వరి ధర్మసత్రం, ఒక ఆయుర్వేద వైద్యశాల, ఒక సంస్కృత కళాశాల, ఆర్యవైశ్య స్మశాన ప్రాంగణం వంటి కట్టడాలను జత చేసిన ఫొటోల్లో చూడవచ్చు.
అప్పటి మద్రాస్ నగరంలోని మౌంట్ రోడ్, చైనా బజారు, మైలాపూరు వంటి ప్రధాన వీధుల్లో ఎంతమంది శ్రేష్టి ప్రముఖుల అంగళ్ళు ఉన్నాయో చూస్తే ఆశ్చర్యం వేస్తుంది. బంగారం , నగలు, ప్రింటింగ్ ప్రెస్సులు, పిండిమిల్లులు, నూనెమిల్లులు, కాయధాన్యాలు, బెల్లం, పంచదార, బియ్యం, రంగులు, వక్కలు, ఇనుము, నీలిమందు, కర్పూరం, సుగంధ ద్రవ్యాలు, గోనెసంచులు, మందుగుండు, స్టేషనరీ, నూలు, బట్టలు, హోటల్స్…ఒకటేమిటి..అన్ని రకాల వ్యాపారాల్లోనూ ఆర్యవైశ్యులున్నట్లు తెలుస్తోంది ఈ డైరక్టరీ చూస్తే.
అన్నిటికంటే ఔరా అనిపించే విషయం, వందేళ్ళ కిందటే చెన్నైలో ఆర్యవైశ్య గ్రాడ్యుయేట్స్ అసోషియేషన్ ఉండడం గమనిస్తే, వ్యాపారమొక్కటే కాకుండా, విద్యకు ఆర్యవైశ్యులిచ్చిన ప్రాధాన్యత స్పష్టంగా తెలుస్తోంది. పైగా అప్పట్లోనే, చదువుకునే విద్యార్ధులకు ఈ గ్రాడ్యుయేట్ సంఘంద్వారా స్కాలర్షిప్స్ ఇవ్వడం కూడా గమనించదగిన అంశం.
ఇక ఆర్యవైశ్య గ్రాడ్యుయేట్ల జాబితా చూస్తే అందులో ఉన్న వందలాదిమంది మద్రాస్ ప్రెసిడెన్సీలోని బళ్ళారి, ఆర్కాట్, అనంతపురం, గుత్తి, కర్నూలు, పొద్దుటూరు, కోస్తాంధ్రప్రాంతంలో బ్రిటీష్ ప్రభుత్వంలో డిప్యూటీ కలెక్టర్లు, తహసీల్దార్లు, సబ్ రిజిస్ట్రార్లు, మేజిస్ట్రేట్లు, మెడికల్, వెటరినరీ కాలేజీల్లో బోధకులు, ప్రభుత్వ లెక్చరర్లు, ఇంజనీర్లు వంటి ఉన్నతోద్యోగాల్లో ఉన్నట్లు కనబడుతోంది. పోలీస్ సబ్ ఇన్సపెక్టర్లు కూడా కనబడ్డారు. అలాగే చాలామంది న్యాయవాద, ఉపాధ్యాయ వృత్తిలో కూడా ఉన్నారు. మద్రాసులోనూ, చుట్టుపక్కల ప్రాంతాలవారి పేరు చివర శ్రేష్టి అని కనబడుతోంది. గుప్తా అనే సూచకం చాలా తక్కువమందికి ఉంది.
ఇక చివరిగా ప్రస్తావించాల్సిన అంశం, ఈ డైరక్టరీలో సభ్యుల కోసం ఇన్‌కమ్‌టాక్స్ పట్టికను ప్రచురించడం. దాన్నిబట్టి ఈ డైరక్టరీలో భాగమైన ఆర్యవైశ్యులందరూ స్థితిమంతులనీ, తాము చేసే వ్యాపారం మీద వచ్చే రాబడికి బ్రిటీష్ ప్రభుత్వానికి ఆదాయపుపన్ను కట్టేవారనీ అర్ధమవుతోంది. అలాగే వారి వ్యాపారనిమిత్తం పార్సిల్స్, ట్రాన్స్పోర్టేషన్ చేయడానికి తపాలా రేట్లు కూడా ప్రచురించారు.
గ్రామీణ ఆర్ధిక వ్యవస్థకి ఆర్యవైశ్యులు అందించిన చేయూతను స్వానుభవంగా ఎరిగినవాడిని, రైతులతో వారు నెరిపిన సత్సంబంధాలు, స్నేహశీలత పట్ల గౌరవాభిమానాలు కలిగినవాడిని. వందేళ్ళ కిందటి ఆర్యవైశ్య సోదరుల వ్యాపార, సాంఘిక వైభవాన్ని, ధార్మికతను, విద్యాశీలతను చదివి ఇలా పంచుకోవడం సంతోషదాయకం !
Rediscovering the Telugu Arya Vaishyas of Yesteryears
Today, I stumbled upon a remarkable book – the Madras Arya Vaishya Directory, first published in 1926. It offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of Telugu Arya Vaishyas thriving in Madras city during that era. Leafing through its pages reveals a tapestry of diverse businesses, philanthropic endeavors supporting grand temples, and numerous scholars contributing to the community’s intellectual wealth.
The photographs included depict establishments like the Kanyakaparameshwari Dharmasala, an Ayurvedic clinic, a Sanskrit school, and the Arya Vaishya cremation grounds – a testament to the community’s robust infrastructure.
Notable areas such as Mount Road, China Bazaar, and Mylapore were bustling hubs where prominent Arya Vaishya figures made their mark. From gold to textiles, printing presses to oil mills, grains to jaggery, and hotels to stationeries – Arya Vaishyas were involved in diverse trades, as reflected in the directory.
Further, the Arya Vaishya Graduates Association in Chennai underscores the community’s commitment to education, offering scholarships to deserving students. The directory also lists Arya Vaishyas occupying esteemed positions under the British administration, including Deputy Collectors, Tehsildars, Sub-Registrars, Magistrates, Medical and Veterinary College instructors, Government lecturers, and engineers.
Even in rural areas, Arya Vaishyas contributed significantly to the economy, fostering close bonds with farmers and earning respect for their integrity. The directory sheds light on the substantial role Arya Vaishyas played in the rural financial system, bridging the gap between urban and rural economies and fostering camaraderie and mutual respect.
